Next Generation Science Standards

On September 4, 2013, the State Board of Education (SBE) adopted the Next Generation Science Standards for California Public Schools, Kindergarten through Grade Twelve. 

 

The NGSS describe the key scientific ideas and practices that all students should learn by the time they graduate from high school. How students reach those performance expectations are left to teacher’s expertise.  

 

The State Board of Education will consider the adoption of a revised curriculum framework and evaluation criteria for instructional materials in science on or before January 31, 2016, to include English language development strategies and strategies to address the needs of students with disabilities.

Eight Practices of Science and Engineering

 

The Next Generation Science Standards Framework identifies eight practices as essential learning for all students in science and engineering: 

1. Asking questions in science and defining problems in engineering

2. Developing and using models 

3. Planning and carrying out investigations

4. Analyzing and interpreting data

5. Using mathematics and computational thinking

6. Construction explanations for science and designing solutions for engineering

7. Engaging in argument from evidence

8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information
